Head of Department,

Building Engineering and Management.

I have the pleasure of introducing the batch of 2014-16 on Master of Building Engineering and Management (BEM). Having gone through the two year full time course, the students are now ready to undertake responsibilities in the profession. The Master’s course of BEM is structured to ensure comprehensive coverage of knowledge and skill needed in the construction industry. Our course has evolved over the last 35 years and refined to take challenge in the profession as a Construction Project Manager. The academic exposure considers performance in a state-of-the-art technologically advanced project situations as well as multi-cultural work environments. The course is pursued through participatory methods and field exposure of live projects apart from lectures.

With the optimism rooted in the positive feedback from industry, I believe that the needs of the recruiters shall converge with the aspirations of the students to create perfectly harmonized job profiles.

The need for the professional management of construction projects by qualified project managers is a well-recognised fact for achieving the project success parameters. Towards this goal, the master degree programme on Building engineering and Management at SPA started way back in 1978 has produced more than 600 construction project management professionals successfully serving in the industry.

The programme imparts knowledge and training on technological and managerial aspects of building projects through comprehensive course curriculum taught by experienced faculty. This practice oriented programme with good exposure to real life projects prepares the young architects and civil engineers to take up challenging managerial positions in the industry.  Sizeable percentage from the program are women who are proving to be successful project management professionals. The batch of students passing out during 2016 is proving to be a talented group and I wish them all the best.

Former HOD, Dept of BEM

The School of Planning and Architecture has been the pioneer institute in the field of building construction management. The faculty at Building Engineering and Management Department adopt a judicious mix of theory and practical applications, which train the students with the requisite skills needed in being efficient project managers.

Here students get opportunities to learn not just through a well-designed curriculum but also through active participation in research and industrial collaborative projects. The curriculum is continually updated to ensure that it is synchronized with the current and fore-seeable needs of the industry.

In addition to the exceptionally bright students, the strength of the department lies in the faculty who have achieved great heights in their own fields. The graduands, not only get fully familiarized with the construction sector but also get inoculated to bring the best practices in management for enhanced performance of the organizations.

Prof (Dr.) Prem C Jain

Ph.D, MTech., BTech.

Chairman, IGBC; Chairman, AECOM India

It is with a sense of joy and pride that I am writing on behalf of the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi.  I continue to teach, as a Visiting Professor, at SPA, New Delhi since 1973, a wonderful journey of more than 40 years.  I have been one of the Founders of SPA’s Master of Building Engineering Management course.  Since its inception in 1979, the course has rediscovered itself regularly, to stay relevant to Construction Industry needs of today and tomorrow.

Many visiting faculty members at SPA are leaders in their own field.  I belong to AECOM, the world’s largest and rated number one, consultancy group.  I also chair with great passion, the Indian Green Building Council.  Therefore, we are able to sensitize our students on the latest trends, methodologies and state-of-the-art technologies practiced around the world – which have direct application for Indian Construction industry.

We have seen time and again that students from SPA-MBEM champion the cause of fire & life safety, sustainability and above all on-time delivery, within budget allocation, for the projects they are involved with.  They will be an asset to the organization they decide to join, as has been the legacy of their seniors over the last three decades.

“The HRM aspect of MBEM course ensures that students become well-versed with soft skills imperative in today’s work environment. At par with global standards, the HR curriculum includes skills such as Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Behaviour, Team Dynamics, Conflict Resolution, Leadership, etc which equip the students with the essential behavioural skills, making them adept managers geared-up to lead diverse teams.

Beyond the classroom HR workshops put the students under simulated conditions where they experience challenging situations only to apply behavioral skills and measure its effectiveness.

They also acquire skills through opportunities which involve hands-on research projects of interacting with HR teams at construction related organizations.

This rigorous exposure to soft skills ensures holistic development of their personality with the promise of being eligible for leadership roles, and thus be a valuable asset to any organization they are a part of.”

My association with SPA as Visiting Faculty is been for over a decade. All these years of teaching at SPA has been highly satisfying and fulfilling in sharing experiences of hands-on learnings of various live projects where we are engaged or employed as Consulting Engineers. Each of the Project in professional working has led to enriching experiences and the same is shared though studio and class interactions with the young and aspiring students of MBEM at SPA.

Many of the Students have taken leadership roles in various capacities and it is immense pleasure as I meet these former students during project design coordination meetings. Life comes to full circle as I work with these leaders with whom I had shared lighter moments of joy and happiness during class interactions. I am sure SPA gives a unique opportunity to each of its students to share and interact with professionals alike us having exposure of actual on-site learnings and experience. These students get into true leadership role in their professional assignment with backing of class room interactions and sound foundation well defined and developed curriculum. My best wishes to the Students of MBEM for continued professional growth.

Director – Proion Consultants

Teaching Young & Enthusiastic Architects & Civil Engineers about my expertise (electrical- design, planning & project management) has always been exciting and challenging at the same time. My association with SPA as Visiting Faculty has been since 2009. The journey of sharing knowledge, experiences, safety requirements, innovative ideas in design, construction related knowledge, etc has been hugely satisfying and fulfilling.

Many of these students are very bright/ brilliant and are far more knowledgeable compared to experienced Architects as they have complete 360 degree knowledge gained from the varied faculty ranging from Designers to Planners to Construction related Professionals. Discussion on Live projects, where each team comes up their viewpoint of innovating & improvising on a predesigned project by experts from the industry is exceptional.  It is exhilarating to see students from this esteemed institute pass out and take leadership roles and their seniors praise at their inherent knowledge and grasp on the planning & construction related expertise.
